October 17th was my first meeting at the University at Albany Cancer Research Center. This was an introduction meeting to review papers, as I have worked at the research center for the past two summers. Today, I began to learn a little more about the research I will be conducting. I will be working in Dr. Martin Tenniswood's lab, where I will be doing research with Dr. Winnie Wang, the director of research for miR Diagnostics. This process began with me reading various articles and sources regarding two types of tests by Seahorse Bioscience. One is the Cell Mito Stress Test Kit which measures the mitochondrial function in the cell by directly measuring the oxygen consumption. Each modulator targets a specific part of the electron transport chain, and the oxygen consumption from the medium gets measured. The second kit is the Glycolysis Stress Test Kit which measure glycolysis under physiological media conditions and the capacity of glycolytic pathways by driving cells towards glycolysis and measuring the increase in activity. It measures the rate of free protons that are released and lactic acid production which measure the ECAR (extracellular Acidification Rate). CAR shuts down oxidative phosphorylation and makes the cell use glycolysis to its maximum capacity. I plan to do this research to see the effect of the zinc transport chain's effect on the Prostate cancer cell metabolism.
I look forward to learning more about the research I will be conducting this year.
